Why Lettuce Is Being Linked to Explosive Diarrhea Parasite in the United States

A fast-growing cyclosporiasis outbreak has put fresh lettuce under the spotlight after health officials connected leafy greens to thousands of illnesses across the United States. The parasite behind the outbreak has already infected more than 7,000 people, raising fresh concerns about food safety during the busy summer season.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with state health departments, has strengthened its findings after weeks of investigation. Officials now say contaminated lettuce and salad greens are the main source of the outbreak, although they continue to examine other possible foods linked to the spread.

Health Officials Zero In on Contaminated Lettuce

However, officials have not identified one specific variety of lettuce or a single grower responsible for every reported illness. The investigation remains active because several food suppliers and distribution chains are still being examined to trace the full path of contamination.

One company has received particular attention during the investigation. Reports indicate that shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms to Taco Bell restaurants may have contributed to part of the outbreak.

Federal investigators also confirmed that lettuce imported from Mexico and served at Taco Bell locations in five states was linked to several infections. Those findings represent one part of the nationwide investigation rather than the entire outbreak.

Foodborne illness investigations often take time because fresh produce moves quickly through farms, processing facilities, distributors, restaurants, and grocery stores. By the time illnesses are reported, the contaminated products have usually been eaten or removed from shelves.

That makes it much harder for investigators to pinpoint one exact shipment. Instead, they compare patient interviews, laboratory testing, and food supply records until clear patterns begin to appear.

What Is Cyclospora and Why Does It Make People So Sick?

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora. People become infected after eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water that carries the parasite.

Unlike many foodborne bacteria, Cyclospora does not spread directly from one sick person to another. The parasite must first mature in the environment before it becomes capable of causing infection, making contaminated produce one of the most common sources.
Symptoms usually appear about one week after exposure. Many people experience frequent watery diarrhea that can become severe and, in some cases, explosive.

The illness often brings stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, poor appetite, weight loss, tiredness, and a mild fever. Some people recover within a few weeks, while others continue dealing with symptoms that disappear and return over several months if left untreated.

Doctors can diagnose the infection using a stool sample that specifically tests for Cyclospora. Once confirmed, the illness is usually treated with a prescribed course of antibiotics that helps clear the parasite and shorten recovery time.

More Than 7,000 Cases Raise Fresh Food Safety Concerns

Michigan has reported the largest number of illnesses, with more than 2,500 confirmed cases. Federal investigators have also confirmed hundreds of domestically acquired infections, while dozens of patients have required hospitalization because of serious symptoms.

Health officials continue reviewing additional reports that may be connected to the outbreak. As laboratory testing continues, the total number of confirmed cases could increase in the coming weeks.
22 of those Washington patients recently traveled to countries where Cyclospora infections are more common. Only three infections were acquired within the United States, while the travel history for two patients remains unclear.
